And he comes highly recommended by countryman Carlos Queiroz, who quit as United No 2 last week to become national team coach.
Bento has guided Lisbon to runners-up spot in the league three campaigns in a row and has won them three cups.
Bento, who played 35 times for Portugal, will raise his profile at United - even with Sporting being in the Champions League.
He has leapt ahead of fellow candidates Pako Ayesteran and Laurent Blanc.

| Derlei is 33 years old. |
| Tuesday, 15 July 2008 |

Vanderlei Fernandes Silva, simply known as Derlei (born July 14, 1975 in São Bernardo do Campo, Brazil), is a Brazilian-Portuguese football player. He currently plays for Portuguese team Sporting C.P., as a striker. Derlei started playing in the lower levels of football in Brazil, but joined U.D. Leiria in 1999, going on to achieve 91 league games, scoring 42 goals. Derlei joined FC Porto in the summer of 2002. He was a big part of José Mourinho's hugely successful squad, since he was one of the top scorers in a side that conquered the UEFA Cup and UEFA Champions League in consecutive seasons. He scored twice for Porto in the 2003 UEFA Cup final against Celtic F.C. In January 2005, after disciplinary problems related to his lateness in arriving from the winter break, he was sold to Dynamo Moscow for 7 million euros, being granted Portuguese citizenship shortly thereafter. He was nicknamed "ninja" while playing for the northern side. After two years of Russian football where he was always one of the top five best goalscorers, Derlei joined SL Benfica on loan, in January 2007. On February 2, he played his first Superliga match for Benfica against Boavista F.C. In June 2007, he left Benfica for Lisbon rivals Sporting Clube de Portugal, signing a contract until 2009, after being freed from his two-year contract with Dynamo Moscow. He was, therefore, one of the few players to have represented the Big Three. Labels: Derlei |

| Sporting tie up Leandro Grimi deal |
|
After over a month of difficult negotiations, Sporting have finally reached agreement with AC Milan over the transfer of left-back, Leandro Grimi. The Lisbon club 2.5 paid million euros for 60% ownership of the player, with Grimi putting pen to paper on a four-year contract. The Argentine defender played for the Lisbon club in the second half of last season, making an excellent impression during a 5-month loan spell. Coach Paulo Bento made it clear he wanted the player in his squad, and Grimi himself stated he was desperate to stay at Sporting, even reportedly rejecting an offer from an un-named Premiership side. “I’m happy, very happy,” said Grimi. “When this negotiation phase dragged on I was worried the deal wouldn’t go through. But my wish was to play for Sporting. I know there was talk of a move to a Premier League club, but I always wanted to return to Sporting. “I know Milan made a big effort to accept the conditions Sporting wanted, which at first they did not agree with. For this reason I am grateful to the directors of the two clubs.
” When asked why he had set his heart on a move back to Lisbon Grimi answered, “because I was always treated well there, because I had great support, because I enjoyed a great six months, because the city if very beautiful and I had no problem adapting. I hope everything continues like that now.” As for the other players Sporting have contracted – Marco Caneira, Helder Postiga, and Fabio Rochemback – the Argentine has no doubts that the Lisbon club are building a strong squad. “They are great acquisitions, but names do not win anything. We have to work hard to win the title.”Labels: AC Milan, Leandro Grimi, Paulo Bento, Sporting |

| New season review |
|
Sporting Clube de Portugal are confident they have invested wisely this summer and are plotting to win more than the Portuguese Cup as they compete for honours both at home and in the UEFA Champions League. Silverware
The Lions finished runners-up behind FC Porto last season, but did get the better of the perennial title-winners in the Taça de Portugal to end the campaign on a high. Coach Paulo Bento has since brought back Sporting old boys Marco Caneira and Fabio Rochemback along with Portugal forward Hélder Postiga from Porto – and he hopes the trio of new arrivals will make the difference this term. "The conditions are in place to have a better season than the last one," he said. "We've been given the tools to do so and now it's up to us to build a stronger team." Friendly win
Sporting kicked off their summer training schedule with a 3-0 friendly success against Clube Atlético do Cacém, and have plenty of time to fine-tune before the Liga gets under way with a home match against promoted CD Trofense on 24 August. "At Sporting there is always pressure," continued Bento. "When things didn't go to plan in recent years people started to demand more from us and this year will be no different. Pressure is good; we want it and we have to deal with it." Leading targets
Having both landed his leading targets and retained Portugal midfielders João Moutinho and Miguel Veloso despite interest from leading foreign clubs, Bento can point to a successful summer in the transfer market. "The main idea with the policy this season was to bring back some players who identified with the club and the Portuguese league," said Bento. "We wanted more mature players and that's what we've got. Now we have to be both organised and create a strong team spirit if we want to win the league." | Scolari targets Moutinho |
| Monday, 14 July 2008 |
Chelsea boss Luiz Felipe Scolari is chasing Sporting midfielder Joao Moutinho.
Moutinho, 21, is an attacking midfield player who was given his international debut by Scolari and became a key player in his Portugal team, alongside Chelsea new boy Deco.
The Moutinho development confirms Chelsea have lost hope of Frank Lampard agreeing a deal. But they will not allow him to team up with Jose Mourinho at Inter Milan for less than £14m.Labels: Chelsea, Joao Moutinho, Scolari, Sporting |

| Milan To Let Grimi Leave For Lisbon |
|
Milan are close to letting young defender Leandro Grimi make his move to Sporting permanent.
Grimi, a left-back also adept in the middle, was snapped up by the Rossoneri at the beginning of last season from Racing Club, of his native Argentina.
However, the 23-year-old does not appear to have done enough to break into the aging Milan back line, as he has since spent half-season spells on loan with Serie A outfit Siena and then Portugal's Sporting, with the latter keen on making the move permanent for the Huracán youth product.
Milan director Ariedo Braida has revealed that the club are satisfied with an offer received for the player, suggesting a move is now imminent upon personal terms being thrashed out between the two clubs.
“We are very happy with the latest offer we have received,”
“We are continuing to work in order to reach an agreement that will suit both parties.
“The paperwork could be completed Tuesday or Wednesday, but most certainly some time next week.”
Grimi made just three appearances for Milan, and having cost €2 million, was essentially worth over €650,000 per appearance.Labels: Inter Milan, Leandro Grimi |

| Everton trial Sporting keeper Stojkovic |
| Saturday, 12 July 2008 |
Sporting goalkeeper Vladimir Stojkovic is set to train with Everton with the view to securing a loan move to The Premier League outfit.
The Serbian is out of favour with Sporting coach Paulo Bento, after joining the Portuguese side in 2007.
The keeper's agent Zoran Stojadinovic says if all goes well, Stojkovic will be offered a year's loan deal by Everton boss David Moyes with the option of making the move permanent.
"If the coach is impressed by Stojkovic, he may decide to move towards purchasing the player," Stojadinovic said.Labels: Everton, Paulo Bento, Sporting, Stojkovic |
